Use tutorial commands to install the Kylin Desktop environment on Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy JellyFish using the terminal.
Kylin is a default Desktop environment for the official Chinese version of Linux developed with help of Ubuntu developers. The OS is known as “Ubuntu Kylin”. It is specifically aimed at Windows switchers and wants to offer an excellent user experience right after installation.
In this Desktop, great efforts are being made such as an adapted Chinese user experience using a Chinese-localized desktop interface.
The desktop is very reminiscent of Windows 10. But unlike LinuxFX, for example, no identical clone is attempted here. Rather, although there are many references, it does not suggest to be a Windows system down to the smallest detail. By default, the user can switch between light and dark. However, we cannot configure the theme. The symbols can be changed. There are a total of three sets from the factory, all three of which look very pretty. We can still add cursor themes. At the bottom, there is the option to set the performance mode, as well as to fine-tune transparency.
Well, Kylin is popular for its beautiful graphical Interface not just in China. Therefore, if you want to try it out by switching your existing GNOME Dekstop environment then we can do that as well.
Here in this tutorial, we will learn the steps to install Kylin Desktop Environment on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Jammy Jellyfish.
1. Requirements
To perform this tutorial, we required the following things:
• Ubuntu 22.04 Linux
• A non-root user with sudo rights
• Terminal access
• Internet Connectivity
2. Perform a System update
It is best practice on Linux to run the system update command once before installing any software. It mitigates the risk of package compatibility issues.
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
3. Install Kylin Desktop Environment on Ubuntu 22.04
As the Ubuntu Kylin is one of the official distro flavors of Canonical developers, we can easily install it on any Ubuntu operating system including Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy JellyFish without adding any third-party repository.
sudo apt install ubuntukylin-desktop -y
Note: If you get an error while executing the Kylin installation command i.e
Depends: libwacom-common (= 1.8-2ubuntu2) but 2.1.0-2 is to be installed
Then first run the two given commands and after that again execute the installation command.
sudo apt remove libwacom2
sudo apt upgrade
4. Select lightdm
While installing the packages of Kylin Desktop UI, the system will ask you to select the Display manager you want to use for this Desktop environment. Use the “Tab” key to select ok, after that select “Lightdm” using arrow keys. Again use the Tab to select Ok and hit the Enter key.
Note: In the future, if you want to switch back to your default Ubuntu Gnome’s GDM display manager use the command-
sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm
Once the installation is completed, restart the system:
sudo reboot
5. Login Kylin Desktop on Ubuntu 22.04
