How to install Zabbix Agent on Debian 11 Bullseye

If you already have a Zabbix server installed and want to monitor any target machine or server then to make things easy use its Agent. Here in this tutorial, we will learn the steps to install Zabbix Agent on Debian 11 Bullseye.

The Zabbix agent is part of the whole open-source network monitoring tool offered by the developers of it. That is required to actively monitor a target/server or to query its resources (HDD, RAM, CPU, database, general statistics, network, etc.). The agent runs as a service on the server or desktops. It is not necessary because the Zabbix server can also collect information using, for example, SNMP, SSH, IPMI, macros, etc. After that, the admin can evaluate the data of various machines using the web interface. Based on the information provided by the Agent the server part of Zabbix can generate alerts in a case of emergency to admins via various channels (email, SMS, etc.).

Zabbix Agent is available for a wide range of platforms Linux, IBM AIX, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, HP-UX, Mac OS X, Solaris: 9, 10, 11, Windows 11/10/and all desktop and server versions since 2000.

Steps to install Zabbix Agent on Debian 11

We already have made a tutorial where the user can know how to install the Zabbix serve on Debian 11 Bullseye or 10 Buster. Here we will focus only on Agent, in case you want to monitor some system that is running on Debian through the server web interface of this network monitoring tool.

Run Apt update

First, we need to run the system update command to rebuild the system repository cache and also to install any security updates, if available.

sudo apt update

Install Zabbix Agent LTS on Debian 11 using APT

The Zabbix Agent is already available to install using the base repository of Debian 11 or 10, however, the version will be a little bit older. It is because base repo only offers well stabled and long term supported packages, hence the version while doing this article was Zabbix Agent 5.0 LTS, however, the latest version was 5.4.x.

Hence to get the LTS version run:

sudo apt install zabbix-agent

For the latest version, download it manually

If you don’t want to install the LTS version and are interesting in getting the latest one available on the Zabbix website then visit its webpage to get the latest repository for your Debian Linux.

Currently, the version is 5.4 and for that, you can use the given steps:

sudo apt install nano wget
wget https://repo.zabbix.com/zabbix/5.4/debian/pool/main/z/zabbix-release/zabbix-release_5.4-1+debian11_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i zabbix-release_5.4-1+debian11_all.deb

Run system update

To apply the changes you have made and let the system fetch the information for the latest packages available through the added repo run the system update command:

sudo apt update

Command to Install latest Zabbix agent on Debian 11 bullseye

Just like we used the APT package manager for getting the LTS- Long term supported version, we can run the same command but this time the package of Zabbix agent will be the latest one.

sudo apt install zabbix-agent

Install zabbix agent debian 11 bullseye linux

Start, Enable and check the server status

Once the agent is installed on your Debian Linux, it will automatically create a background service to run the Agent silently. However, we have to start and enable it.

sudo systemctl enable --now zabbix-agent

Check the status:

systemctl status zabbix-agent

Zabbix Agent Service debian 11
