Learn how to enable or disable the UFW “uncomplicated firewall” on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Jammy JellfyFish Linux to manage the access of applications’ to outside network access.

Ubuntu comes with a default firewall called UFW “uncomplicated firewall.” It is meant to make the complicated command-line syntax of the Linux firewall easy for blocking or allowing ports and applications on the system.

Moreover, if you are not familiar with commands then we can install a Graphical user interface for UFW to manage things easily with a few clicks.

Here in this article, we will discuss how to do that?

Steps to Enable/Disable UFW Firewall on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

Step 1: Check Firewall status

Before knowing how to disable or enable the UFW, let’s know what is the current status of the Firewall on our system. This will give us an idea of what action we have to take.

sudo ufw status

Note: If the UFW firewall is not installed on your system, then to install it use: sudo apt install ufw

Step 2: To Enable the Firewall on Ubuntu 22.04

If the output of the Status command is “inactive” then it means the firewall is not running and is already disabled on your system. To change its status and make the Firewall active or enable, use:

sudo ufw enable

Step 3: To Disable UFW Firewall

Well, if the status of your Firewall is “active” or you simply want to disable your UFW firewall on Ubuntu 22.04, then follow this command:

sudo ufw disable

Enable or Disable the UFW firewall using GUI

We already have learned the way to Turn on or off the UFW firewall on Ubuntu. However, if you are new to Linux or not much familiar with Linux Firewall commands then GUI is the easy option to go for.

Install UFW GUI:

sudo apt install gufw

Once the installation is completed, go to Application launcher and search for “Firewall”. As its icon appears, click to run the same.

There on the GUI, you will have a Toggle button. Users can click it to disable or enable the firewall on the system.
