Download AlmaLinux & Oracle Linux based on RHEL 8.4 now!

After the announcement of RedHat for ending up the LTS version of CentOS, people start looking for other options and AlmaLinux & Oracle are a few of the stable ones available to use. Recently, developers of both these server Linux distros announced their latest version based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8.4. This means that both AlmaLinux 8.4 and Oracle Linux 8.4 benefit from many of the features added or changed in their upper stream distribution project.

AlmaLinux 8.4 offers full support of Secure Boot along with the UEFI feature that is debatable by the Linux community. Apart from these OpenSCAP security profiles, the publication of the development repository with packages and additional build dependencies that are not present in the official release stream, and the disabling of the PowerTools repository to move it to a separate file called ‘almalinux-powertools.repo’.

Among the new modules are Python 3.9, SWIG 4.0, Subversion 1.14, Redis 6, PostgreSQL 13, MariaDB 10.5, and the compilers have been updated to GCC 10, LLVM 11, Rust 1.49 and Go 1.15.7.

A significant number of packages have also been removed, many of which are linked to Red Hat or its trademark: ‘kmod-redhat- *’, ‘kpatch *’, ‘redhat-backgrounds’,’ redhat-indexhtml ‘,’ redhat-logos ‘,’ redhat-logos-httpd ‘,’ redhat-release ‘,’ redhat-release-eula ‘,’ spice-client-win-x64 ‘,’ spice-client-win-x86 ‘,’ spice- qxl-wddm-dod ‘,’ spice-vdagent-win-x64 ‘,’ spice-vdagent-win-x86 ‘,’ virt-who ‘and’ virtio-win ‘, among others.

On the other hand, we have Oracle Linux 8.4, which comes with versions for x86 64-bit (x86_64) and ARM 64-bit (aarch64). With regard to tools related to programming in Oracle Linux 8.4 ars the same as AlmaLinux 8.4. The RPM plugin replaces the YUM plugin because its functionality is not limited to YUM transactions and at the same time takes into account the changes made by RPM ”.
