Install Adobe Acrobat Reader DC on Ubuntu 24.04 or 22.04 LTS Jammy

Learn the simple steps to install Adobe’s Acrobat Reader DC using Wine on Ubuntu 24.04 Noble or 22.04 LTS Jammy JellyFIsh Linux, which allows you to read PDF files.

Adobe’s Acrobat Reader DC program allows us to open, read, and edit PDF files. The basic version of Acrobat Reader is free of charge and can be easily downloaded from the Internet. However, with the program’s free version, you only have access to a subset of the available tools. To use features such as protecting and converting PDF files, you need the paid version of Adobe Acrobat.

Users can also use the program to add notes and markers to their documents, rearrange the pages within the file, or convert the file to a different format. With Acrobat Reader, you can also protect your PDFs with a password or share them with other people. The DC in Acrobat Reader stands for Document Cloud.

Since the reader in the DC version can be connected to cloud services, you can access your files across different devices. However, in addition to this function, the DC version offers other advantages compared to other programs. This includes using integrated text recognition to scan paper documents and convert them into PDFs.

It is available for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. Unfortunately, Adobe, the developer of Acrobat Reader DC, has discontinued the Linux version. Hence, we have one option: using Wine to install Adobe’s Acrobat Reader DC on Linux, such as Ubuntu 24.04 or 22.04 LTS.

Steps to install Adobe Reader DC on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

To install Acrobat Reader here on Ubuntu 24.04 or 22.04, you can use SNAP for previous versions of this Linux, such as 18.07/20.04.

1. Requirements

To follow this tutorial, you must have system user access with sudo rights and an active internet connection to download the packages we need to set up Adobe Reader.

 

2. Perform a system update

Although we are planning to use SNAP here, so we don’t need to update our system yet, it is a good practice to do so if you haven’t done so for a while.

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

 

3. Install Adobe Reader on Ubuntu 24.04 or 22.04 LTS

We cannot install Adobe Reader directly on Ubuntu 24.04 or 22.04 LTS because it is unavailable in Debian binary format. Hence, we need to use Wine. However, we can install Wine and Adobe Reader in an isolated environment using SNAP. Just use the given snap command on your Ubuntu Linux.

sudo snap install acrordrdc

 

4. Run the Acrobat PDF Reader

Once the installation is completed, run the Acrobat reader from the Application launcher by clicking on its icon or using the command terminal. Here, we are showing both methods.

Using Terminal:

acrordrdc
or 
acrordrdc &

Using GUI Application launcher:

After running the Adobe Reader, you have to wait for a few minutes because the system needs some time to set up Wine properly on your system.

It will prepare the Windows compatibility layer. Then, click the “Install” button to start the setup process.

 

5. Installer Language

Select the language in which you want to download the Acrobat Reader Setup.

 

6. Always open with protected mode disabled

Due to some incompatibility issues, when the system asks, “Would you like to open Adobe Acrobat Reader with Protected Mode Disabled?” Select the option given and then click on the OK button.

Wait for a few seconds and Accept the terms and conditions.

 

7. Acrobat on Ubuntu 24.04 or 22.04

Your system’s Acrobat Reader is in perfect working condition. You can start reading PDF files using this Linux program.

 

7. How to disable Acrobat Reader future updates

(Optional) Automatic updates of Adobe Reader may break or make the installation unstable until the developer of this Snap releases the update. Therefore, you can disable Acrobat’s internet connection access using the given command.

sudo snap disconnect acrordrdc:network

8. Uninstall or Remove

Here is the command if you are having trouble with the program and want to remove the Adobe reader from your Ubuntu 24.04 or 22.04 LTS Linux.

sudo snap remove acrordrdc
