How to install Brave Browser for Fedora Linux

Here we are using the Fedora 34 Linux to install Brave browser using terminal, however, the steps will be the same for older versions such as Fedora 33, 32, 30, 29, 28…

Brave browser is based on Google Chromium but with added features in visual and security areas. Unlike Chrome, it is an open-source browser that automatically blocks ad trackers and cookies. Brave is also called a “crypto browser” because it uses the Ethereum blockchain that is used to secure user’s data.

HTTP accesses are automatically redirected to HTTPS in the Brave browser. Furthermore, there is an incentive to display advertising features know as “Brave Rewards”. As the browser is based on Chromium, you can use extensions from the Chrome Web Store.

Steps to install Brave Browser for Fedora Linux

The steps are given here can be used on Fedora 34 including other RPM-based Linux distros such as RHEL and CentOS 7 & 8.

1. Install Dependencies

By default most of the time Fedora will already have a config-manger tool to enable or disable repos, however, if you don’t have then install the same using the below-given command:

sudo dnf install dnf-plugins-core

2. Add Brave browser repository on Fedora

The packages we need to install Brave browser are not available in the base repo of the Fedora system, hence we need to add the official one, manually, using the DNF config manager.

sudo dnf config-manager --add-repo https://brave-browser-rpm-release.s3.brave.com/x86_64/

3. Import GPG key

For security reasons, the Linux system needs to verify the packages we are getting from any repository; to ensure they are from the genuine source without any kind of alteration. And for that, we add a GPG key signed by the Brave developers for their browser packages.

sudo rpm --import https://brave-browser-rpm-release.s3.brave.com/brave-core.asc

4. Run system update

Rebuild the system repository cache to ensure Fedora can recognize the packages available in the newly added repo of Brave.

sudo dnf update

4. Command to download Brave browser on Fedora 34

Finally, we have done all the things required to install the brave browser on Fedora Linux systems. Now, simply use the DNF package manager to set up the browser on your system.

sudo dnf install brave-browser
