There are multiple ways to install the popular Inkscape on Ubuntu 20.04 focal or 22.04 Jammy jellyfish, if not available already on your system.
Inkscape is an open-source graphics program that can be used to create vector graphics. Its source code is available to use and anyone can change the program code, use the program and redistribute it, and it is supported by a community of dedicated, volunteer developers. Hence, unlike a single entity, there is a community efforts to build and develop this graphic editor. Inkscape offers numerous tools and different shapes, paths, texts, markings, clones, transparency effects (alpha), transformations, color gradients, patterns, and groups. The free tool also supports Creative Commons metadata, node editing, layers, complex path operations, bitmap tracing, path-bound texts, text that flows around objects, direct XML editing, and much more.
Install Inkscape on Ubuntu 20.04 | 22.04 LTS
#1st method using PPA APT package manager:
Note: While doing tis tutorial packages from the PPA were only available for Ubuntu 20.04 not 22.04.
1. Apt Update
Let’s run the APT update command to rebuild the system repository cache and update already installed pacakges.
sudo apt update
2. Add Inspace PPA repository
Inksapce is an open source and popular program but not available directly using the base repository of Ubuntu to install. Hence, we need to add the offcial PPA repo that offers it packages to install. Therefore, just on your command terminal use the Add APT package manager command given below.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:inkscape.dev/stable
Update the repo cache:
sudo apt update
3. Install Inkspace on Ubuntu 20.04
Once you have added the repository, run the regular APT package installation command to get Inkspace on your system.
sudo apt install inkscape
4. Remove (optional)
Those who want to remove the software after some time, use:
sudo apt remove --autoremove inkscape
To remove repo:
sudo add-apt-repository --remvoe ppa:inkscape.dev/stable
#2nd method using snap
5. Download Inkspace using Snap on Ubuntu 22.04 | 20.04
Well, the good thing is SNAP comes enabled in both Ubuntu 20.04 and 22.04 by default. Hence, we can easily install Inkspace by using its command:
sudo snap install inkscape
6. Uninstallation Inkspace
If you have installed the Inkspace using the SNAP command then to remove it use:
sudo snap remove inkspace
#3rd Method Using App Image
7. Run Inskspace Using App Image
Visit the offcial website, here is the link. Click on the Linux and download the APP Image.
Once the App Image on your system, open command terminal and switch to “Downloads” folder.
cd Downloads
8. Make App Image executable
We need to mark the APP image files as executable to run on our Linux.
chmod u+x Inkscape-*-x86_64.AppImage
9. To start the Inkspace:
Once the file is executable run the same by adding ./
before the file name and after that hit the Enter key.
./Inkscape-*-x86_64.AppImage
#Use Ubuntu App Center
10. Use Ubuntu GUI Software Center
